Why Does My Dryer Keep Shutting Off?

A dryer that stops mid-cycle may involve airflow, heat, load, door, power, sensor, or motor conditions. Learn what its shutdown pattern can reveal.

A dryer that repeatedly stops before its cycle should be finished may be reacting to restricted airflow and excess heat, but the cause can also involve the load, door latch or switch, household power, motor protection, moisture-sensor logic, controls, or model-specific cycle behavior. What happens immediately after the stop matters: note whether the display stays on, the breaker trips, the machine feels unusually hot, the door moves, or the dryer works again only after cooling. Stop using it for burning odor, smoke, sparking, gas odor, severe overheating, a damaged cord or receptacle, or repeated breaker trips.

What happens when the dryer stops?

Start with the behavior you can observe rather than guessing at a part. “Shuts off” can mean the drum stops while the controls remain awake, the entire machine loses power, an automatic cycle decides the load is dry, or a protective condition interrupts operation. Those patterns do not point to the same troubleshooting path.

Timing is evidence, not a diagnosis

Write down when the stop occurs, the selected cycle, the load, and whether the dryer had already completed another load. A repeatable pattern gives an appliance technician far more useful information than “it sometimes quits.”

A stop immediately after Start makes the door signal, power, load movement, cycle selection, or a starting fault relevant. A stop after several minutes of heating moves airflow, temperature, and motor behavior higher on the list. Near the end of an automatic cycle, the machine may be responding to its dryness logic rather than failing.

If consecutive loads make the symptom more likely, retained heat or a temperature-sensitive condition deserves attention. Intermittent operation still matters: an unstable connection, switch, control, or cycling component can behave normally between failures.

Patterns become more useful when they repeat under similar loads and settings.

Restricted airflow can raise heat and trigger trouble

A conventional vented dryer moves heated air through the drum, transition duct, building exhaust, and outdoor termination. A loaded lint filter, crushed connector, obstructed exterior hood, lint-filled house duct, or other restriction can keep heat and moisture from leaving normally.

The result may be long drying, an unusually hot cabinet or room, weak exterior exhaust, safety-control activity, or shutdown behavior depending on the model and fault. A restricted vent is important to rule out, but it is not a universal explanation for every dryer that stops.

Clean the lint filter, look for an obvious crush or sharp kink in accessible ducting, and observe the outdoor cover from a safe ground-level location if the dryer can be operated without a warning condition. Inaccessible, long, damaged, or persistently weak exhaust paths need qualified cleaning or repair.

Door, load, and motor patterns can look similar

Door latch or safety-switch behavior

Dryers use a door-related interlock so tumbling stops or cannot begin when the machine detects an open door. A door that does not latch firmly, visible latch damage, or a stop that follows vibration makes that signal relevant. Do not hold the switch closed, tape the door, or bypass the interlock.

Load size and distribution

An overloaded drum can strain movement, reduce tumbling and airflow, or push against the door. A very small load may not contact moisture sensors consistently on some automatic cycles. Follow the model's capacity and cycle guidance rather than using a universal weight limit. If a reasonable mixed load behaves differently, record that clue.

Motor or temperature-dependent protection

Manufacturer guidance documents that motor overload protection can stop some dryers when the motor becomes too hot, with operation potentially returning after a cool-down. That pattern can also have other causes, so it supports professional diagnosis; it does not identify the motor, capacitor, bearing, or thermal component by itself.

Did the drum stop, or did the dryer lose power?

If controls remain illuminated, household power is still reaching at least part of the dryer. Cycle logic, the door circuit, the drive system, or another control condition becomes more relevant than a total supply interruption.

If the display goes dark, check only whether the breaker is tripped and whether the cord, plug, or receptacle shows visible damage, melting, discoloration, or abnormal heat. Do not remove covers, probe voltage, replace a breaker, or keep resetting a breaker that trips again.

A repeated trip, intermittent total power loss, hot receptacle, burning-plastic odor, buzzing, or sparking needs a qualified electrician or appliance technician as appropriate. The symptom alone cannot establish whether the problem is in the appliance or the building circuit.

An automatic cycle may be ending early, not losing power

Many dryers use moisture sensing or model-specific algorithms to change cycle time. A small load may miss the sensing surfaces, residue may affect sensor contact, or the selected automatic cycle may decide the load has reached its target dryness. Some displays change the estimated time as the cycle progresses.

Compare the observed behavior with the owner's manual, selected dryness level, load type, and any error code. If the manufacturer documents a different supported cycle for diagnosis, the result can help service—but do not invent test modes or run a machine that has heat, odor, electrical, gas, or mechanical warning signs.

A sudden change across several appropriate loads, an error code, or a drum that stops while the control appears to continue makes a component or control problem more plausible. Wet clothes alone do not identify a moisture sensor, thermostat, relay, or control board.

Vented, ventless, gas, and electric dryers need different checks

Most familiar full-size dryers are vented, but condenser and heat-pump dryers recirculate air and manage moisture without a conventional outdoor exhaust. A heat-pump or condenser dryer may instead depend on model-specific filters, a water container, a drain path, and longer low-temperature cycles. Do not apply exterior-vent advice to a machine that has no exhaust duct.

Electric and gas vented dryers share airflow concerns but use different heat sources. High-voltage electric components and gas burner, valve, ignition, and connector systems are not homeowner diagnostic areas. Use the model number and manual to identify the configuration before acting on generic advice.

If a gas odor is present, stop using the dryer, leave the area, and follow the gas utility or emergency authority's instructions. Do not operate switches, disconnect piping, adjust a burner, or repeatedly start the machine to confirm the smell.

What you can check safely

  • Stop the cycle and note the elapsed time, selected cycle, load, and whether this was the first or a later load.
  • Determine whether the drum alone stopped or all lights and display power disappeared.
  • Clean the lint filter and inspect it for heavy loading, residue, or damage.
  • Look for an accessible transition duct that is crushed, sharply kinked, separated, or damaged without moving the appliance against its utilities.
  • Observe an outdoor vent cover only from a safe location and only when no stop-use warning is present.
  • Check that the door closes and latches normally; do not manipulate the safety switch.
  • Reduce an obviously overfilled load according to the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Record error codes, unusual heat, buzzing, grinding, odor, breaker trips, and whether the dryer returns after cooling.
  • Consult the owner's manual for automatic-cycle, moisture-sensor, ventless-filter, water-container, and maintenance instructions.

When to stop using the dryer and who to call

Stop using the dryer for smoke, sparking, visible scorching, a melting or burning odor, gas odor, severe overheating, a damaged cord, a hot or melted plug or receptacle, signs of arcing, abnormal grinding with shutdown, or repeated breaker trips. Do not run another cycle to gather more evidence under those conditions. For active fire or smoke, leave the area and call emergency services.

Use an appliance technician when the shutdown repeats after basic safe checks, the machine stops hot and reliably restarts only after cooling, the door safety mechanism is inconsistent, an error code persists, or a motor, sensor, thermal, drive, or control fault is plausible. Use qualified dryer-vent service when the exhaust path is inaccessible or airflow remains weak.

Use a licensed electrician for repeated breaker trips, intermittent household power, receptacle or cord heat, sparking, discoloration, or other building-circuit concerns. Use qualified gas-appliance service for burner, ignition, connector, or gas-supply concerns after the immediate gas-safety steps have been followed.
