Why Is Mold Growing Around My Windows?

Does the window glass get wet first?
When droplets form on the room-facing glass during cold weather or overnight and then reach the sill, recurring condensation is a plausible moisture supply. Warm, moist room air contacting sufficiently cold glass can condense; repeated wetting and incomplete drying can keep dust, paint, caulk, wood, or nearby finishes damp enough for growth.

Why window-area growth often gets worse in winter
Cold outdoor conditions lower the temperature of indoor glass, frames, and edge areas. If indoor air still carries substantial moisture, condensation becomes easier on those surfaces. What if moisture is between the panes?
Fog or droplets trapped inside a conventional sealed insulated-glass unit are a different glazing problem. They do not directly explain growth on an exposed interior sill or frame unless a separate moisture source is also wetting that surface.

What do damaged caulk, wood, or trim tell you?
Discoloration limited to caulk can reflect persistent dampness, surface growth, embedded staining, age, or material deterioration. Can you clean mold around a window yourself?
EPA says many limited mold problems under about 10 square feet can often be handled by the homeowner, but that is a cleanup-planning guideline—not proof that every small window problem is safe or superficial. Water damage, porous materials, contaminated water, HVAC involvement, hidden growth, occupant health concerns, and personal ability all change the decision.
For a small accessible hard surface, EPA guidance describes scrubbing with detergent and water and drying completely. Do you need a mold test?
Testing is not the default response to visible growth and a moisture problem.
